iPad Pro augmented reality demo demo.

One of the most exciting moments at Apple's WDCC conference is the iPad Pro augmented reality demo demo. We have seen simple AR applications such as virtual cups and virtual desk lamps placed on the desktop. We also saw complex applications, such as the AR experience brought by Wingnut AR, a studio owned by Peter Jackson, an action scene that included landscapes, human characters, vehicles, and explosions.

After the keynote speech, the iPad's AR demo was briefly experienced. The first part of the demo includes placing objects on the table. When the object is presented behind the screen, as you move the iPad, the object's shadow can change according to the lighting in the room.

Apple added a shadow effect to the AR, which more effectively increased the fidelity of the virtual object, as if the item really placed on the desktop.

In addition, the AR application can maintain the object's size distance. For example, when the object is close to the iPad, the image on the screen will gradually become larger; and when you remove the iPad, the image will become smaller.

Combining these two effects can greatly improve the overall object's realism. Virtual cups and lamps look like they really are in front of them.

The second part of Demo is a "Star Wars" board game. The board is displayed on the table, but you should notice that the image does not have any shadows. This is because the game is still in beta.

We have already seen AR effects such as "Pokemon Go" games, but including "Star Wars" board games, their rendering still needs to be further improved so that the virtual images will look exactly like the real scene.

The "Star Wars" board game demo includes an animated character, so you can judge how well this AR application maintains the frame rate. The actual effect looks very good, without notice any image split, intermittent or significant jitter. The game runs quite smoothly, but this "Star Wars" board game is not as complex as the Wingnut AR display, so we think it still remains to be seen how AR will handle moving images.

Developers can develop AR applications through the latest ARKit. AR is part of iOS 11 and is now open to developers. The full rollout of iOS 11 will officially begin this fall.
